The Right Clubs for You

December 29th, 2009 by Senior Golfer

A personal recommendation: Selecting the right golf clubs for you.

Selecting the right golf clubs for you is an involved process We are all different and because of our differences we need help. My suggestion is like anything the quality of help will impact the quality of the results. A friend will likely tell you what you need based on limited information, and a golf pro (much better choice) may be motivated by a relationship with a name manufacturer, or worst the markup …………….

Why Good Golf Shoes

December 29th, 2009 by Senior Golfer

Shoes have been called the foundation of a good golf swing, a point I will not argue. What I would suggest is playing any sport with the proper shoe to support your feet. Not only should you look at price and comfort, but the construction of the shoe. In all fairness most salespeople are not trained to know the difference. Their training is sales.

A common foot problem for golfers, that can be avoided, is called neuroma, or a pinched nerve, at the bottom of the foot. It typically

Putting Tip

Improve your putting with the Nick Faldo-tested thumb pointing drill

When I was in my teens, in the 1960s at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas, co-owner Jackie Burke taught me how to become a great putter. He constantly reminded me that great putters felt it in their fingertips and that all putts went wherever the hands went, good or bad. He made me very aware that my focus should be only on what my hands were doing and not what the putter head or ball were doing – that they were the effect of using the hands properly.

Since then, putting for me has always been easy and fun and also easy to teach. I was lucky enough to have someone who understood what great putting felt like pass it along to me. Since most golfers have never been taught this simple solution to great putting I have developed some feel drills that will help anyone become a better putter.

Here’s a drill I taught Nick Faldo in 2000 that improved his putting

Handicap

December 21st, 2009 by Senior Golfer

I have struggle with the value of the handicap system for years. Maybe it is just me but I feel the handicap system causes more problems than it solves. The scores can be falsely represented (sandbagger), and then it takes away the pleasure of competion from those that did offer a proper handicap. At the same time I play with some low to plus handicap players, and I feel bad takening strokes. Reason: I par a stroke hole, and they have to birdie or lose the hole. Net score for the round is different, but we like to play match.

OK, I am asking a question, but at the same time offering my experience as to why handicaps don’t really work all that well.

I was playing with a plus handicap (one that hated to give any strokes), asked me to name the game, number of strokes he had to give, and name the game. I offered.. OK, lets’ play but no strokers. He was in shock until
