Handicap

I have struggle with the value of the handicap system for years. Maybe it is just me but I feel the handicap system causes more problems than it solves. The scores can be falsely represented (sandbagger), and then it takes away the pleasure of competion from those that did offer a proper handicap. At the same time I play with some low to plus handicap players, and I feel bad takening strokes. Reason: I par a stroke hole, and they have to birdie or lose the hole. Net score for the round is different, but we like to play match.

OK, I am asking a question, but at the same time offering my experience as to why handicaps don’t really work all that well.

I was playing with a plus handicap (one that hated to give any strokes), asked me to name the game, number of strokes he had to give, and name the game. I offered.. OK, lets’ play but no strokers. He was in shock until I explained that I would get the choice of “either” drive off the tee. He gave it some thought then said fair, tee it up. Well we had one of the more enjoyable games that we ever played. His advantage over my game was his distance off the tee, but even with his distance he would sometimes spray a shot, and thus giving me the advantage. Otherwise I played the hole in from his long tee shot and were heads up with our short game.

To me this method, adjusting tees (the better player play the back tees).

Now back to my question I would like to hear some other opinions, and games that even out the play better than strokes. I am sure there are plenty of both. By the way one of my favorite is the Ryder Cup format.

The sandbagging is not limited to amatuers. I have seen a PGA Club Pro rig his friends handicap to play in a Pro/Guest tournement. And the later use the same handicap at his home course were he was known to be under a 2, and playing a 10. Another reson for my question.

Thanks, now lets’ tee it up.
